I was in the process of applying for my CDA a year and a half ago, but was put on hold because we ran out of funding. Is there a time frame for the parent questionaires? I was looking in the CDA booklet and online, but it said nothing about having the parent questionaires be too old, or needing to be updated anywhere. I just wanted to make sure before I go any further!

      Loren,
The Parent Questionnaires have to be dated within 6 months of the receipt by the Council of your application… so yours are expired. You will need to re-distribute new Parent Questionnaires. Also, if your Professional Portfolio was completed more than 6 months ago, it will need to be updated, too. If you were observed by a CDA Advisor, the Observation Instrument she filled out during your observation can only be 6 months old at the time of application. So, you may need to re-do several pieces of your CDA process before applying.

Yikes! thanks for letting me know! do you know if there is a website that i can go on to print out new surveys? I’d rather not spend more money to buy new surveys 😦

        Loren,
Do you know someone who is working on a CDA and has an application packet? Ask for one of their extra questionnaires and make copies of it.

        Renita,
There is no website with practice questions. I do have CDA Prep Flashcards on my website you would like. Check them out.

If my current employer is paying for my cda classes currently and I leave there can I pay to take my test or will I have to re take all of the classes? Also, if I recieve my cda in missouri will it still be valid if I move to another state?

Deb, my family childcare CDA is due for my first renewal in July. I am currently working in a center but leaving at the end of March to reopen my home childcare. My question is about the statement from an early childhood professional. Can I have my current director write this for me before I leave in March and hang onto it until submitting my renewal packet or does it need to be done closer to renewal. I know that my packet can’t be submitted until 90 days prior to expiration and with the launch of cda 2.0 (not knowing if the process will change for renewals) I was thinking I should submit it in May. Either way, will they accept it dated March 29th (my lastday of employment) or does it need to be closer to the date I submit my renewal?

    Hi Deb,
I finished my online training last year and had hoped to work on the porfolio and details of obtaining the Cda (with help from your book that I purchased last year) this school year. Now it’s March and I haven’t gotten any of this done like I wanted to. I originally thought it would be easier to work on the portfolio during the school year as I daily lesson plan for the preschool I work in. and thought the entire process would go hand in hand and be fresh. Now I’m beginning to panic with the changes in the Cda process as the deadline approaches. Should I or is it at all possible to get this ball rolling before the new changes or not. Can I pass out the parent questionnaires I have to my current families and then finish the portfolio this summer and find an advisor, etc. in the Fall? I know there is a six month window after sending out the questionnaires. Are these new guidelines making the Cda process easier or more difficult for the candidate?
thank you so much for your advice and help.

Patricia, Your Professional Resource File will be accepted until December of this year, but the rest of the process you will go through will be new. If you have not even started the Professional Resource File, you probably should wait until the new Competency Standards books come out from the Council (they say next week) and just put together the new Professional Portfolio instead. The CDA Prep Guide will not help you with the new process. I am in the process of revising the Prep Guide to reflect the new CDA 2.0 process, but in the meantime, you might very well be interested in the new Workbook I am about to make available on my website. It will walk you through each step of this new process, including putting together your Professional Portfolio, writing the new Statements of Competence, and preparing for the newly structured Verification Visit. I will be announcing when it is available soon. Deb

I have a question concerning the CDA renewal. I currently have my CDA in preschool age children 3-5 and im not due to renew it until May of 2015. I currently work for a childcare center as a preschool teacher but and thinking about doing a nanny position for awhile. In order for me to renew in 2015 do I need to be working in a childcare center or is it ok to be a fulltime nanny for a family?? does that count as the “working with families of young children (a minimum of 80 hours) requirement? and would I be able to use my old center director as my ECE reviewer at that time of renewal?? she was also my advisor when completing my CDA.

    Thanks, Melissa

      Melissa,
Yes, your hours of being a nanny will count. And yes, your former director can complete your reference form for your renewal. Remember… there will no longer be any grace periods for renewal, so you will want to make sure you renew before your CDA expires!

I like the classes offered by “Eager to Learn” out of Minnesota (You don’t have to live there to take them!) Check them out at eagertolearn.org.
Courses you should probably stay away from are those offered by Smart Horizons.

Two questions: First, you said to stay away from courses offered by Smart Horizons. Can you tell me why? Second, do you know what things the council will give waivers for? I was teaching preschool in my home until the end of February 2013 and all of those parents would gladly fill out the parent questionnaires but there isn’t a director since I was working alone. Also, I’m not working in a center now so are there other options for the observation/verification visit? Thank you for this blog! It’s so helpful!

      April 23, 2013 at 4:22 pm

Online courses of that type are automated. You read a passage and then answer questions. You have no actual teaching from an instructor or even any human contact! I like to tell students that the purpose of the CDA training is to improve our practices with young children and to remember that we are working with children, not pieces of machinery or dry cleaning. Students need to have the benefit of experienced instructors who share expertise and knowledge of teaching children. I think you could get an adequate training with an automated online course if you were learning to change oil in car, but we are working with dynamic little human beings and they deserve better quality, trained teachers. This is just my humble opinion and probably the opinion of other instructors, as well. Look for online training that provides interaction (and lots of it!) with a qualified instructor.
To answer your other questions… if you were teaching in your home, that would not be “center-based preschool.” It would be family child care. Was this a licensed program, or did you have less than 6 children in your care (or whatever the minimum is in your state that excuses you from being licensed)?
You need to be working with young children in order to complete the CDA process. You could start volunteering in a program for a couple months, so the parents and children know you well enough before the PD Specialist has to observe you there. The Council will give waivers for training hours, in some cases… not ALL of the training hours, but a few. They will also make it possible for candidates to take their CDA exam in another language. If you are having an issue, you need to call the Council and explain what it is and see what they can do for you.

I totally understand what you mean. If I had the chance to do it over, I’d pick another option just because I would like more interaction. However, I do know the material. I just need those little pieces of paper that say I did the coursework.
I have contacted the Council through email and their online chat system but never received a response. I do still volunteer at my child’s school (Kindergarten class) but before I was teaching only a handful of kids (low enough to not need a license) in my home. It was those parents that really pushed me to get my CDA and look into opening a larger center. That’s what I’m doing now. I really do appreciate all your help! Can’t wait for the CDA Workbook to come out!

You can get the 2nd edition of The CDA Prep Guide from Amazon.com. Are you finished with your CDA training and have you begun on the CDA process yet? If not, you probably do not want to purchase that edition of The CDA Prep Guide, because you will be using the new CDA 2.0 process. The CDA Prep Guide is being revised to reflect this new process and won’t be available until June.

I am currently a fully time nanny. I had started the CDA in my toddler class 2 years ago but left to be a nanny. I would now like to restart the CDA program and was wondering if I can earn my CDA just being a nanny for a family of 3? The instructions online are not very clear. I do not understand how to get an advisor if I am just a nanny and doing everything in the family’s home?

    • 35 Deb Pierce
      July 27, 2013 at 1:24 pm

      Liz,
You will need to be working in a child care program to earn a CDA. A nanny position will not qualify.

      • July 30, 2013 at 8:34 pm

Just a question to clarify: I’m going for the Family Child Care CDA. I’m a nanny as well and hoping to get my CDA that way. Can I still receive my CDA while being a nanny?
I started my CDA a while ago when I was teaching preschool but then relocated to another state where I’m working as a nanny for only one child. They are due with their second child in Oct.
I have an abundance of experience as a teacher and nanny for multiple children, but I’ve been with this family for 2 1/2 years. Can I still recieve my CDA even if I only have worked with one child for the most part, but a combination of multiple children within the past three years?
I was think of having the PDS evaluate me after the second child is born.

        Thanks.

No you do not. Just remember to renew the CDA you have every 3 years. Once it expires, it will be void and you will then have to earn a new CDA under the new CDA 2.0 process.

      Shameka,
My best advice would be to get a copy of the CDA Prep Workbook. It will help you with your Portfolio, step-by-step. If you need help assembling the portfolio, you might also like the pre-assembled binder, so all you have to do is follow along in the Workbook and put in the items as instructed. There is a combo (workbook and binder) on my website… easycda.com.

I have everything done and sent in my application before the new CDA 2.0 was started so I am just waiting on my CDA rep to come do the oral and written questions with me, look over my resource file and take my questionnares. I am currently working at a child care center in Georgia, my start date was August 5th, before I started I was told I would have a year from employment to complete my CDA. Around the first of October, I was unexpectedly notified that I had until December 1st to complete my CDA? How can this be? I am also suppose to be finished with my state exam and evaluation as well. Im at a loss on whether or not this is true, everywhere ive read says you have a year from the start of employment if your a lead teacher (which I am)

    • 60 Deb Pierce
      November 11, 2013 at 2:45 am

      Sarah,
This must have to do with state licensing. Your program must have been told recently that its lead teachers would have to have a CDA by Dec. 1 or face violations. They probably knew this for a while, but chose to ignore it. Have you completed your training for a CDA as yet? If not, you wouldn’t be able to make this deadline. They will probably have you become an assistant teacher until you get your CDA.

I received my CDA in 2009 and renewed it in 2012. I went on the CDA website and entered in all my info so that I would be reminded when I need to renew my CDA. I assumed under the new 2.0 process that I would have to renew it in 2015 but it’s saying I don’t need to renew it until 2017. I’m confused…isn’t it every 3 years? I would hate to wait until 2017 and have it expire.

    • 62 Deb Pierce
      January 14, 2014 at 5:00 pm

Lynn, Renew by 2015 and do NOT wait for any kind of reminder from the Council. The chances of getting one is slim to none. Renewal must take place within three years, not 5. Yours will expire after your anniversary date in 2015. If you wait until 2017, you will have to re-do the entire process and earn a new CDA. The Council will just say they made an error and you will be out of luck. Deb

So glad I asked! Thanks! I do have another question…what do they mean by needing documented proof of a “three-credit-hour course” ? I live in Mpls so I can just take 3 hours of classes from mnstream.org? I remember when I renewed it the first time I had to write a big paper on a seminar I went to. Is it just me or are the requirements to renew much easier this time around?

Hi, I am trying to get my CDA, its been kind of frustrating because I am doing it by myself and I have too many questions. I am currently working in a child care center with the two year old children but what I want is to get a CDA that applies to the ages from birth to 5 years old. Is there any way that I could do that if I am working with toddlers right now?
    Thanks in advance!

    • 66 Deb Pierce
      January 16, 2014 at 4:31 am

      Karina,
There is not one CDA for all of those age groups. You will earn a CDA for Infant/Toddler, because you are currently working with toddlers. Once you earn your CDA, it will be accepted regardless of whether or not you work with toddlers or preschoolers. If you really want to earn a second CDA later for preschool, you can. You will need to repeat the entire process again for that setting. You might be able to use some of the training you took for your Infant/Toddler CDA, if it is general in nature (such as health & safety) and not specific to infants or toddlers.

      Tea,
You say you submitted everything… what did you submit and to whom?If you sent in an application, it is only good for 6 months. Since this time may have expired, you will need to be certified under the new CDA 2.0 process. You will have to revise your binder to comply with the new structure of the Professional Portfolio. Your Competency Statements will also need to be revised. You will be observed again by a PD Specialist at the Verification Visit. You can get help with all of this from the CDA Prep Workbook.

Hi! Do you know if in service hours and clock hours are related for the 120 hour requirement of the cda process? And do college course units (3 credits) count for 45 clock hours? Do the requirements vary by state Im in Nevada.

    • 72 Deb Pierce
      February 3, 2014 at 2:18 am

      Vanette,
A 3-credit hour course is 45 clock hours. In-service hours can be used, as well, as long as they were provided under the auspices of a recognized training agency. The requirements do not vary by state.

I received an email from NAECY saying that there is a free webinar next week and that participants will get a “certificate of participation”. Do you know if that would count toward my 45 hours to renew my CDA? I have tried contacting the council several times to ask them but I can’t get through (live chat, email or phone).

    • 74 Deb Pierce
      January 23, 2014 at 10:36 pm

      Lynn,
This webinar will not count towards your renewal. Your hours either have to be credit hours from taking a course or CEU’s from a recognized training agency. You need 45 clock hours or 4.5 CEU’s.

Hi! I have worked as a substitute for the last 5 years in licensed home-based child care. I currently nanny. Will I be able to apply for CDA? How do I go about proving that I have completed the 480 hours in 5 years? Do I send parent questionnaires to former families of those child care providers? or just to the family I nanny for? Will the advocate come to the house I nanny for or will I have to schedule a date at the child care home?

    Thank You

    Amie

    • 80 Deb Pierce
      February 4, 2014 at 3:42 am

      Amie,
You will need to have the owner of the home-based child care write a statement indicating that you have worked at least 450 hours with her. See f you can arrange to have your observation at this program, because you can’t use the nanny situation. How long ago were you working there? If it hasn’t been too long, maybe you can have those parents fill out the Questionnaires and then be observed working with the same children. Hopefully you have completed all of your required CDA training because it sounds like you need to get going with this ASAP.

    Hi Deb. ,

How early do you recommend one starts the renewal process for the CDA? I received mine in sep 2012 and its up sep 2015. Also the credits requested, do these have to be college based or can they include in- centre trainings received? Of so do these training certificates have to say CEU’s received? Thanks much.

    • 82 Deb Pierce
      February 26, 2014 at 11:09 pm

      Holly,
The first step would be to acquire the 45 clock hours or 4.5 CEUs of training you need. These can be college courses (only one 3-credit course will do) or CEUs earned from taking training from a training agency. In-center training won’t work unless it was provided by a trainer who works for a training agency and has provided you with a certificate or completion indicating the training agency.
Then, order a Renewal Packet from the Council. Some of the requirements for renewal include membership for about a year in an early childhood organization, such as NAEYC. Also, a current (as of the date you apply for renewal) first aid/CPR certificate, and a letter of recommendation from an early childhood professional who is familiar with your work with young children. You can apply for renewal with a mail-in paper application or online.

Thanks so much Deb. How soon before the expired date does one start the renewal process ? And how early can I send it in? Asking because I dont know how long the process takes.

      • 84 Deb Pierce
        March 4, 2014 at 7:22 pm

        Holly,
The required training hours are what may take time, so allow for that. You are now allowed, however, to apply for renewal any more than 6 months before the expiration date.

      Marthy19,
Yes, you most certainly do OPEN and READ the Parent Questionnaires. One of your Competency Statements requires that you reflect on the responses given and the PD Specialist will also ask you to reflect on these.

I’m currently finishing obtaining my CDA in New York working on my finishing my portfolio although I’m confused as to the “letters” they say we need with our transcripts, certificates and official documentation are these person references or previous employers and what do these letters need to say? I bought and have the infant and toddler 2.0 competency standard book and couldn’t find anything!

    • 88 Deb Pierce
      April 16, 2014 at 3:41 pm

      Nikki,
Who are these “they” people who are telling you about what you “need”?
As long as your transcripts and/or certificates are current, authentic, and signed or otherwise indicate they are official, you don’t need any “letters.”
The only so-called “letter” would be a signed statement from your center-director saying it is okay for the PD Specialist to conduct the Verification Visit at her program. This is on the application form (both paper and online).

If you simply do a search for “translation services” in your city in Michigan, I am sure quite a few will come up. Remember, you also need to find a service that does ASL translation.

I have completed my educational component for CDA and my portfolio is almost ready. But the preschool I work is closed for the summer. It will reopen in August. I am planning on contacting the PDA specialist around that time. How long will it take for them to come for verification?

    • 96 Deb Pierce
      June 14, 2014 at 2:25 am

      Raji,
Have you sent in your application to the Council and have they responded with a “Ready to Schedule” email, letting you know you are ready to go ahead with your CDA Exam and your Verification Visit with the PD Specialist? If not, you must do this first. You can go ahead now and contact a PD Specialist and get her lined up and ready. Then, when your application has been approved and you get that email from the Council, you’ll be ready to go.

It should not be too long, unless your application fee is being paid by a third-party agency. This sometimes causes some delays to have the payment processed.

I would become a member of NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children). When joining the national association, you automatically become a member of your state’s affiliate organization, as well! If you are a student anywhere, you can get a reduced membership as a student. Check all this out on their website: naeyc.org

I am working on the competency statements for the new version of the portfolio. I’ve been looking up examples of competency goals online to give me an idea of how to start writing. I see that most people have their statements written starting with the competency goal, and then breaking it down like “Functional area 1: Safe” and so on. I don’t see anything about doing it this way in the new book. Was this just the old way of doing it? I was just planning on writing it as one statement containing the entire competency statement of Planning a safe, healthy learning environment (for example) and not breaking it down by 1. Safe 2. Healthy 3. Learning, but want to make sure this is not something that still must be done. It’s so confusing not being able to see an example of what they want!

    • 111 Deb Pierce
      November 3, 2014 at 8:53 pm

      Jamie,
You can do it either way, but I highly suggest doing it one Functional Area at a time. This makes it a lot easier for the PD Specialist to see that you have addressed each of them adequately.

      Lynn,
You will need to contact the Council to ask if these little “articles” and follow-up tests would be accepted. I have a feeling they will NOT be accepted. You can go to the Council’s website and quickly ask on their Chat feature: http://messenger.providesupport.com/messenger/cdacouncil.html They may refer you to someone else for assistance in evaluating this so-called “training.” I am generally not in favor of such training venues.

      Denise,
In the unlikely event you are not awarded a CDA, you can appeal and will hopefully get a second Verification Visit at no charge. If you get a letter saying you did not earn your CDA, be sure to have someone (an early childhood professional) look over your Portfolio to see if there are any parts that would need revising or correcting.

    • 121 Deb Pierce
      January 8, 2015 at 3:42 am

      Krystal,
Unfortunately, you can no longer renew your CDA. The good news is you can re-use the training hours you took for your original CDA. You will need to complete the rest of the process, however… put together a Professional Portfolio, have a Verification Visit (including an observation) with a PD Specialist, and take an exam. The process is completely different now (CDA 2.0), so you’ll need to purchase a new Competency Standards book from the Council. I also suggest getting the CDA Prep Workbook from my website. It will help you every step of the way.

    HI Deb,

I Have a question on the renewal. I work in a Head Start Program where our Director has scheduled trainings for us throughout the year. We get certificates and hours of the training signed by her. I see in the new upcoming renewal starting Oct 2015 it says something about a Directors Form? Can the Director confirm and sign something stating our training hours are legit and this be used as my 45 clock hours. I have been attending these trainings and collecting my certificates since I received my CDA In May of 2013. ( This was how I received most of my training hours that were turned in for my original CDA.)
I have ordered my application packet already through the mail and don’t see anything in there about a Directors Form??? I’m a bit confused.

      January 6, 2016 at 4:30 pm

      Joy,
In order to renew your CDA, you will need to join a local or national early childhood organization. If you join NAEYC, you are automatically also part of your local (state) affiliate. You do not have to subscribe to any publication, but a perk to joining NAEYC is also receiving an included subscription to their professional journal (magazine). In order to renew your CDA, you will also need to acquire some additional training (clock hours or CEU’s, not workshops). As a student, you can receive a reduced student membership rate for joining NAEYC. You just need to enter your student ID or social security number when joining online.

New research has been done, and child care is not at all like it was “back in the day” 27 years ago. You definitely need some new, up-to-date training in order to be a successful child care owner. I would think you are a bit “stale” after all these years. No offense intended, but it’s the truth. With the new scholarships available, getting training can be free or next to free for you.

      Marcia,
You would need to call the Council to see if any of the training you acquired in Jamaica will count towards your CDA here. You need 120 clock hours of training for a CDA. I am not sure what you mean by the “40 hours.”

        Arlene,
No, you don’t have to be a FCC provider at the time of renewal, but have to have been working with young children a certain number of hours since you got your CDA.

Can I take my CDA exam test online?

      Nasma,
The CDA Exam is taken on a computer at a Pearson VUE Testing Center in your community. It cannot be taken at your home, if that is what you are asking. The Exam is just one part of the required evaluation for a CDA. You will also need to be observed working with young children where you are employed.

I finished the CDA class work. How long to I have before having to take the test? Is there a dead line? I finished 6 months ago and haven’t done anything else. Thank you

      Brenda,
As long as you have not applied (sent in an application) for your CDA, there is no deadline. Once the application is submitted, however, you have 6 months to complete the process. If you assembled a portfolio six months ago, it will need to be updated to reflect the group of children you are working with at the time of your observation. Also, if you collected Family Questionnaires 6 months ago, they aren’t any good anymore and new ones will need to be collected so they are up-to-date.

      Caniah,
If you had a national CDA (awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition), it would be valid in every state. These “state” CDA’s are really worthless, except in your own state. You will need to call the California state licensing agency and ask if any of the training you took to get that Illinois “CDA” will be accepted. My advice to you would be to get a national CDA (the training you have or some of it will qualify for this. My advice to anyone reading this and thinking about getting a state “CDA”… Don’t. Get a national CDA.

I’ve taken my CDA exam and do my visit this Monday. How long will it take for me to find out if I passed or not from the CDA Council ?

      Sharon.
Once the PD Specialist enters your visit scores after your observation, you should get an email from the Council. If, for some reason you were denied, you would get a letter in the mail.

      Maublette,
There are also a number of paid sites or you can buy a monthly membership. But once you have your Verification Visit, you could just delete your portfolio. No one will use it

Hi, i just took the cda exam, but im sure I fail. Do they let me retake the exam or do I have to retake the course. Also how long it takes to know if you pass after you tale the exam?

      May 28, 2017 at 5:10 pm

      Gloria,
Think positive! What makes you think you failed? The Exam is only part of what they use to determine if you get your CDA. So, even if you did poorly on the Exam, you could still get your CDA if everything else was fine. You will never know how you did on the Exam, as the Council never sends you the score. They will either send an email saying you have earned your CDA or a letter in the mail saying you did not. If you did not, you will have to re-apply and try again. You will not, however, have to re-take any of your training hours. You can re-use those.

Good morning!! My CDA expires in March 2018, when is the best time to start the renewal process? Thanks Raji

        June 17, 2017 at 2:59 am

        Raji,
You can’t renew any earlier than 6 months before your CDA is about to expire. But, you can go ahead and get started on getting the 4.5 CEUs (or 45 clock hours) of new training required for renewal. You can also download the renewal information on the Council website. When the time comes, you should renew online, becasue it is cheaper.

        Raji,
You really should not have your director be your PD Specialist, eve if she is certified to do so. It would be a conflict of interest.
        Deb
